Question:
Bad Taste in my Mouth. Why do I have such a horrible taste in my mouth all they time?
I'm 5 weeks post op and I have this horrible taste in my mouth and it is always very very dry in the back. I produce and excess amount saliva around the dry spot. It gets so dry sometimes it makes me vomit. I'd appriciate any help you can give me. — Linda M. (posted on July 2, 2000)

I had that nasty tast too! Nothing tasted good because of it, especially
water. I think it was because of the anesthetic. Anyhow, it slowly went
away and I enjoy the taste of food again. I still can't stand plain
water, so I buy Fruit2 0 so I can get my water in.

I am five weeks post-op too and also have a bad taste in my mouth that
never quite goes away. I have found that ice water helps for a while. I
brush my teeth and tongue frequently and that also helps. Mouthwash seemed
to dry my mouth out more. I seem to remember from my nursing training that
a diet proportionately higher in protein can cause acidosis which can lead
to a bad taste in the mouth and bad breath. Keeping that in mind, I have
tried to add in more carbohydrates with my protein.

That horrible taste in your mouth is from your body losing too much fat so
rapidly. It is called ketosis. It can also affect the smell of your
urine. This will come and go in our way down in size.
