Question:
How many feet of intestines are bypassed in Proximal vs distal bypass?
I keep hearing about the proximal vs distal bypass. I know my Dr does the Mini Gastric Bypass and he typically bypasses 6 feet of intestines. I just wonder how this compares. Just want to be as informed as possible. — Glenda E. (posted on July 1, 2000)

Bearing in mind that intestines don't come in standard sizes, I only know
for certain how much I have left in use, about 40". I know how much
the "right side" of my Y is, so I can deduce from those figures
that I have ABOUT 18 feet bypassed. I no longer count calories or fats or
carbs, but I do worry about sugar and I MUST supplement certain elements or
simply not get them. It's worth it to ME not to diet and hold my weight,
but it may not be to everyone. Also, proximal and distal are just words.
One doctor may consider 12 inches proximal, 5 feet distal. My doc considers
10 feet proximal, 18 feet distal and somethign in between to be medial.
The WORDS mean nothing. It's all in the numbers!

My doctor told me 5 feet of intestine was bypassed and I'm considered a
proximal.
