Question:
Please rescue me from this wild itchiness!!!!!!

I have read that others have experienced this horrible horrible itching post-op. I'm 3.5 weeks out and have never itched so bad in my life, from head to toe. I'm drinking my water, moisturizing three hundred times a day and NOTHING HELPS!!!!!!! Does anyone have some magical remedy? I'm ready to remove my skin! I can't sleep and I am truly going mad. I had the itching but mainly in the hospital as I was allergic to the morphine and didn't know it. It subsided as soon as the morphine was out of my system. Are you by chance taking any pain meds that might be causing it?

If it is not from dry skin or dehydration, is there any chance you have changed laundry detergent, fabric softener, any meds, etc as it could be an allergic reaction. Hope you find the answer.

I itched like crazy for about 3 months, actually drew blood scratching my self raw, i couldn't go past a corner post in the house without acting like a bear and rubbing my back. I tried several things, not much worked, Benadryl at night helped a bit. One doctor said it was from lack of zinc or some fish oil. Good luck.

at 3 weeks, I hope you are off your pain meds but I thought I'd post this anyways. I left the hospital with liquid lortab which is the same as vicodin or hydrocordone (sp?) - I think hydro...is the generic of the two. Anyways, I was itchy like crazy and my pcp said it is those meds. They make you itch a lot if you are taking it regular or too often. Good luck with your itching.

Hi Jennifer- You may have come into contact with something you're highly allergic to. When this happens to my husband, he goes to the ER and gets a series of hydrocortisone (i think?) pills. You can probably get them from your PCP. If someone knows the pills as a different name than hydrocortisone pills, please correct me. These pills are the only thing that helps him at this point. He stays on them for about a week. Good Luck :o)

I was miserable until I went to my PCP and he prescribed predisone for, I think 3-5 days. The itching was gone within 2 days! Blessed relief!

Just to rule out allergy, have you tried an antihistime to see if it relieves the itching?

When I was getting physical therapy for lymphedema and had itchy legs that had to be wrapped for 24 to 48 hours ata stretch, my PT turned me on to Sarnol, a OTC hydrocortisone cream with methol and camphor. I would scratch my legs until blood ran, they itched so bad. But the Sarnol really did stop the itching under the wrapping. If hydrocortisone is not up your alley, there is Sarna lotion with just the menthol and camphor that works almost as well. I swear by these two products. Good luck.

Another thing that helps with extreme itching is to put as hot of water as you can stand on the area that itches. I'm not sure exactly why it works, but when I do that it gives me relief from the itch.
