Question:
Has anyone experience severe back pain?

I am 6 weeks out from surgery and I have been having severe back pain. It is in the upper part between my shoulder blades. I had a chest x-ray and blood work done and it all came back normal.... Now my surgeon wants me to have a cat scan of the chest and abdomen. Has anyone else experienced this?? The pain comes and goes.... It is almost like a spasm but why would I be having this... and it has been going on for about a month... Any suggestions?    — Jaime K. (posted on August 26, 2003)

If you have a large panni it can be from that. One woman in our suppor group is having lots of upper back pain (thoracic area) because she has such a large panni that it is constantly pulling her body forward. It truly hurts her to try and stand up straight. Therefore all of the muscles in that area are being way over stressedand getting sore. You might try a a back brace (elastic device) that helps pull your shoulders back and provide support for the upper body.

You didn't mention in your question if you are large chested or not... I am so I know allllll about the back pain... and I have heard others say and I believe it to be true when you start losing the weight the weight is shifting and putting pressure in different places... also maybe check with a chiropractor maybe you have something out in your back as well. Don't let him jump on you tho as they tend to do on adjustments, as that would not be a good thing after the surgery they can do the adjusting from behind... mine does! Hope this helps!!

I had this problem a few months ago...I believe it is like the other poster said, shifting weight and stuff. I had horrible upper back pain there for a while, but it has since gone away and no further problems.

I had the same thing and it turned out to be pouch irritation. I thought the DR. was wrong because of the location of the pain but she said it directly effects that area of the back. She put me on Prevacid and I no longer have a problem.

I've had back pain since about 3 weeks out. It's a little better now, meaning it comes and goes and is NOT as intense. But for weeks and weeks - I existed on pain meds (prescribed by dr.) my pain was basically at the base of my ribs on the right side of my back bone. It was so intense it would make me perspire and pant (sort of like childbirth). As the pain progressed it would involve my entire back including my shoulders. Often it would make me think "if someone would only give me a massage" ... finally I am seeing a chiropractor and he suggested that it was something that came as a result of being on the operating table. Over the years he's seen a few cases like this. I still have it on some day - but not every day and not ALL day. Good luck to you.

About 2 months ago, I began having spasms and pains in my upper back. I do have some arthritis in my lower back, so was a little alarmed when the upper back begn hurting. Also began having more gas and abdominal upsets and pains. To make a long story short, I just had my gall bladder removed due to gallstones, which was the root cause of all the pain.
