Question:
Look like I am going to have to self pay (In MEXICO!) Will my ins pay for
complications? Should I not tell ins company that I have surgery? I just wouldn't be able to afford getting sick once Im home! Any advice would be helpful on Mexico (Dr. Aguirre) and Insurance coverage afterwards! Thanks — Snowflake48342 (posted on May 31, 2003)

If you have any complications afterwards your insurance WILL NOT cover it..
CHeck your coverage book - if you go ahead with a surgery they 'do not
cover' they don't pay for complications. and even if you didnt 'tell' your
insurance company; trust me, if you have complications they will find out.

Alicia..the other poster is correct. Your insurance will not cover
complications OR any follow up related to your surgery. This could put you
out of quite a bit of money depending on how you do. Have you tried
calling the Lindstroms w/obesitylaw.com? Even if you don't hire them, they
will let you know their struggles with your insurance and maybe guide you
in the direction to go. Explore this before Mexico, and be careful,
usually insurance only allows a certain number of appeals and that's it!
It took me a year, from start to finish, so hang in there! =)

I have read on here that Dr. Aguirre is a very top-notch surgeon MEXICO.
And that if you have complications, he will fly you back at no cost to you.
You might go to Latrisha Nickels profile for more info. Be very careful.

Hi~ Your insurance will not cover any complications due to the surgery, not
only because your going to Mexico but they would not cover it if you self
payed here in the United States. Dr.Aguirre will take care of any problems
you have. You will have to pay for travel and hotel expenses. He will
"not" pay for that. You will not have to pay him anything for
anything else. He will provide everything else at no cost to you. He is a
wonderful surgeon and I really don't think you will have any problems at
all. Good Luck!

Any complications that occur from a surgery that they don't cover will be
auto-denied for the first 12 months (typically).

Complications are very costly in the US. My insurance does say it will not
cover complications due to weightloss. I have been in ER 2 time and day
surgery center 1, so far the bills would have been more than $15k. My
insurance did pay and without any problems. I was very straight forward and
told them the truth about Mexico and the surgery type...Go figure??? I am
just happy!
