Question:
What is everyone eating for protein ata 5 weeks post op

Hi, I am 5 weeks post op from an open ryn. I have been living on Carnation Instant, No Sugar Added, cottage cheese, cream of wheat and egg substitute. I need help. I am so bored with the diet some days I think I will go nuts. I need some ideas of what others are doing. Protein is what I need. Can you have string cheese, cans of turkey chili with no beans, anything from taco bell or any fast food restaurant. I know I have to be careful what I eat and don't want to do anything wrong but I really need help with protein ideas that actually taste goood. I have already lost 23 lbs. and I very excited about that but any help will be appreciated.    — Maureen C. (posted on May 19, 2003)

I am 7 weeks out now, but at 5 weeks I was already having cheese. My surgeon says you can have any kind of cheese, I do string cheese because it is 1oz each packet. He also said I could have really round up ground beef, tuna, very moist chicken (a little at a time), beans, mashed potatoes, cheese enchiladas (eat the cheese and sauce). Hope this helps.

At 5 weeks, I was so bored with my meals, I began the next stage (which started at 6 weeks)...deli thin meats was the major thing. As far as cheese goes, that was on my diet from the beginning...no probs! And Taco Bell beans...a must!

I got bored also but ate fish (from Red Lobster), lots of chicken (Louis Rich chicken strips already cooked)Fazolli's kid's lasagne(which would last through about 3 meals).I put peanut butter on a banana or cracker. Good luck

I am just two weeks post-op. I haven't been real excited to puree any food; haven't even used the processor once. I am getting around puree by eating foods that are allowed without being mashed into baby food. My favorite meal to make is a very small version of the tuna melt; I take two saltine crackers, break up a slice of fat free american chees, and place 1/2 tablespoon of tuna on the top. I also survive on alot of cottage cheese, but mix it with the table spoon of fruit; kindda like the cottage cheese doubles at the grocery store. I hope this helps.

How about an omelette? No reason you shouldn't be able to eat eggs with cheese. Also yogurt, beans, nuts, chili, chicken soup (but drain the broth), deli meats like turkey or chicken (b/c they are thin and softer- easier to chew to mush) and cheese cheese cheese! lol I lived off cheese in the beginning- mozzarella, american, cheddar, etc. Hope this helps. You shouldn't really eat anything from fast food at this point. Maybe chili's from WENDY's or you could try a soft taco from taco bell (but don't eat all the bread and skip the lettuce- harder to digest) But, ofcourse, fast food should be used as treats or specialoccasions. Goodluck to you.

I will be 5 wks out tomorrow. I have eaten 1/4 - 1/2 mexican pizza from Taco Bell (no tomatoes or green onions). The meat is so fine that it was easy to digest, not to mention quite tasty after all the bland stuff I've been eating. Cottage cheese, chicken (I prefer dark meat at this point because it is moister), still at least 1 protein drink a day, cheese, soups. I know people tell us to not eat (or at least watch) the soup, but I am NEVER hungry. I have not been hungry one single time since surgery (not complaining) and I have a tendency to not eat as often as I should. I do have either CIB (no sugar) or oatmeal for breakfast. I used to be able to do an egg...but no more. I think I'm going to try Wendy's chili tonight. Oh fish, yes FISH is a GREAT protein source. I've had shrimp & baked whitefish. YUMMY! Good luck (-31) Diane

Gosh, I remember those days! Congrats on your loss so far, btw. Sometimes the bland gets to be a wee bit much, doesn't it? If you're craving some fast food, I remember that I indulged in some Taco Bell pintos 'n cheese, and thought it was divine. For a healthier alternative, I used to heat up a 1/2 cup of fat free refried beans, and top that w/a bit of shredded cheddar & sour cream. A decent amount of protein, not too bad on fat, quick & easy. I basically lived on this meal for several weeks, it was very flavorful (compared to what I'd been eating) and was easy for me to tolerate. Good luck!

Mmmm I loved it when I was able to eat the pinto N cheese from taco bell, I still eat a few a week. Chili from wendy's, but I only ate that during the pureed and soft food period. I still eat alot of tuna fish, cottage cheese, string cheese and protien bars. It is a lifestyle change that's for sure, but now I watch my family eat and im like UGH how can you eat that crap or eat so much lol Good luck!

Hmmm protein ideas that taste good at 5 weeks lol lol!!!!! I lived off of reduced fat cheese, nonfat milk, fat free refried vegetarian beans, ground turkey and salad with fat free dressing. That was pretty much all I ate for the first few months. The diet is super boring but it works. Once you are a little farther along you will be able to add some variety to your diet so don't get discouraged. Wendi open RNY 9/19/02 down 123lbs
