Question:
Will soft foods help you to feel better?

My husband had his RNY on May 8th. I am suppose to have mine in July after he feels better. He says he did not know it would be this hard. He is still on clear liquids so I keep telling him it will get better. I really don't know because I have not had the surgery. I feel really awful for him and it makes me wonder if I should do this. When he goes to soft foods will he feel better?    — annasgranma (posted on May 11, 2003)

The first 2-4 weeks are pretty hard to take. But, it gets better every day, for lots of people. Just be patient with him, and make sure he gets in as much fluid as possible. He'll feel better soon! Sheesh... I was still in the hospital at 4 days post op. Poor thing! He'll be ok, he really will. Then, it will be your turn!

It WILL get better. The first few weeks are rough. Hang in there.

At this point, what he eats has little or nothing to do with how he feels. First few weeks po-op is often a wretched time for us. It's going to get better. Get him walking and drinking his water. Better days ahead. Honest. Hang in there.

Rhonda, it does get better. This is the hardest thing I ever did in my life. I've had good days and bad days. Most days I'm consuming less than 500 calaries a day.I'll be two months post-op May 14th. I have lost my taste for food and have no appetite. There are days I don't feel very well. I'm sure it's from not eating. But, it gets better each day. The fatigue is very depressing. Now, I'm a little more active and that helps. Getting your fluid in is the most important thing you can do for yourself early on. The rest will come later. I do eat some regular food and that helps a lot. Everyone tells me I will snap out of it and feel so much better by at least the third month (everyone is different). Don't be discouraged. It's a short period of time and it's worth it. Good luck to both of you!

It's only been a few days for him! He'll need at least a couple weeks to even feel normal, in two months, his surgery will be old news!

Husband and wife team here. Give it another week and just wait till that scale shows a BIG drop! You will have wished you went first. I know my wife did... Hubby first, thats pretty rare.

When I was going through that first month, I remember what helped me was just to make a routine of getting water and protein in. My absolute favorite treat during that time was Popsicle brand sugar-free popsicles. Their flavor is fairly strong (orange, grape, cherry) and the cold felt so good going down. It was my daily treat for getting all my protein in. Tell your hubby to keep his chin up--IT DOES GET BETTER AND IT SURE IS WORTH IT!!!! I'm 9 mos post-op and down 141 lbs.

And yes, once he's off of liquids he'll feel (most generally) so much better. Less weak, more filled up and more encouraged about eating.

Reassure him it will get better! I think most of us thought "what the heck did I do to myself" the first few weeks/months. It gradually gets better everday. I was miserable my first month with pain and the liquids, etc. I thought it wouldn't end, but had the support of my parents telling me it will get better, and it did. Now at 1 year post-op I can handle most foods and am happy to be at goal! Soft foods helped a little, coated the stomach. And I believe Bob said wait until you see the big drop in the scale, usually that moment makes it all worth it! Goodluck to you!
