Question:
Is there anyone out there who pre-op getting surgery soon that has a hernia
I'm just wondering because i'm having surgery in Sept and I've been getting these dull like pains, cramps occasionlly and I'm not trowing up blood nor are my BM's black. I was wondering has anyone had surgery not knowing you had a hernia did they cancel it or when they were operation on you did they fix it. Can you even have a hernia and have this surgery? — jennifer O. (posted on July 5, 2002)

I thought I had an umbilical hernia for several years before my surgery but
never did anything about it. After I had my LAP RNY, my surgeon casually
mentioned that he had fixed the hernia while he was doing the other
procedure, so I got an added bonus to having the surgery done. It
shouldn't be a problem for you either. Good luck! - Mike

I went in for surgery not having any clue I had an umbilical hernia. The
doctor mentioned it when I was done. He told me he fixed it while he was
in there, the only difference I had was I had an open RNY and my scar is a
bit longer than most people because of the hernia. It will be fine, and
good luck to you.

Hi... I am having surgery soon, and yes, I have an umbilical hernia. The
surgeon will do the repair when he does the surgery. However, I was told
that if the hernia strangulated before the surgery, I would have to have it
taken care of and the WLS would have to wait. My fingers (and toes!!) are
crossed that nothing will happen between now and my surgery date (soon to
be scheduled!). I am taking precautions by not lifting heavy objects, etc.
Hope this helps! Good luck, Kathie (in Hawaii)........

Hi Jennifer,
I had an umbilical hernia and the Dr fixed it at the same time as my RNY.
This was my second time getting it fixed. I do blame much of my post-op
pain on the hernia (HURTS). Now I am 3 1/2 weeks post-op and feeling
great. Take it easy and try not to lift or strain excessively and you'll
avoid the strangulation. Much success on your journey.

I am not pre-op but I can offer a little insight into this question. I had
my surgery November 29 - RNY with gallbladder removal. When I woke up in
the recovery room, my family told me I had a little "extra". The
surgeon found an umbilical hernia when he was doing the surgery and
repaired it. In fact, he didn't even charge me for the hernia repair.
Unfortunately I now have another one - but being 7 months post-op and
needing to lose another 70 or so pounds, he has no plans to repair it til
it's tummy tuck time unless it gets much worse.
Hope this helps you some.
