Question:
Has any experienced Stomach Ulcers Post op?

I had my surgery in 1999 and just recently (last week) have been diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. I am on prevacid and feel a little better. Any one experienced this? Should I be concerned? Should I call my Dr. who did the surgery? Also I have started having IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) do you think this is all related? I have NEVER had any problems with my surgery till now :( Thanks for your help in advance    — Nicole S. (posted on June 9, 2002)

Hello-hello-hello. Thank GOD for Prevacid! I take one every morning and sometimes in the evening. I had ulcers on and off since age 20 something and have thru the years been on the tagamets and others. Prevacid prior to surgery. Went about 7 months post op and landed back on Prevacid. In my case, it wasn't the surgery. Yes, you should notify your surgeon. My surgeon put me back on the Prevacid and my Internist refills it!

I was under the impression that you couldn't get ulcers from gastric juices any more post-op. Because there aren't any. I don't really know though.

Hi. I am 3 months post-op and I developed a very LARGE ulcer at about 4 weeks post-op and I was miserable!! It was so bad that it felt like I was being stabbed in my stomache with a knife! I went in for an endoscopy to see the size of the ulcer....I also had a small stricture. I am now on Nexium once a day AND Carafate 4 times a day! Thank God for the Carafate!!!! I am feeling much better! Down 43#!! Good luck and God Bless!

I had an stomach ulcer at 7 weeks post op due to getting a shot of motrin in the emergency room. I didn't realize it was motrin until they gave it to me. I had so pain but I needed 3 blood transfusions. I have been on protonix ever since. Tracy

Did they call it a marginal ulcer? I had regular ulcers since age 19, then several marginal ulcers post-op, but right away. My doc used Prilosec, but as long as it's something. And carrafate--a must have in my med cabinet. IBS, as in????? Or is it lactose intolerance, which can happen as we get older?
