Question:
Numbness and partial paralysis?
I can't be sure this has anything to do with WLS, but I don't know who else to ask. Here's my problem. On Thursday morning, when I woke up, I was tripping over my left big toe. It didn't feel like it was asleep or anything, but I was definately walking weird. I can "sort of" flex my toes on my left foot down, but I can't flex my big toe up...which makes it difficult to walk. The numbness is midway up my calf now. I have absolutely no control over my big toe now...and I'm having a difficult time controling almost all of my left foot and leg now also. I can use my hand to pull my toe UP, but when I let go (even though I'm flexing my muscles to hold it there) my toe just flops right back down. As I said, this happened to me on Thursday morning and now it's Sunday and it just isn't getting better. I thought maybe it might have something to do with potassium levels, so I've been eating bananas, but still nothing. Then, to top it off, I'm having trouble controlling my fingers and arm on my left side also! My PCP moved out of state, so my ins. company is in the process of assigning me a new PCP...plus it's the holiday, so I couldn't even call anyone until Tuesday. Anyone have any idea what is happening to me? Thanks So much! — Kristin R. (posted on May 27, 2002)

Kristin,
If your local hospital as a "doc in a box" location (you know,
those smaller offices that are open for emergencies) - get there! If not,
go to your hospital's emergency room. My mother has suffered numerous
strokes - I'm not saying you are having a problem, but if you are, there's
just a small window of opportunity to catch it before it becomes
devestating. Better to be safe than sorry....I hope that all is well with
you and that this is a false alarm.

kristen, I don't want to scare you, but please go to your emergency room
right now, my mother in law to had a stroke and did not have any signs of
it and suffered a massive stroke, I'm not saying that's what is going on
with you, but it is better to be safe than sorry. God Bless

I agree with the other poster, you need to seek medical advise right now,
Go to your emergency room and tell them of the numbness and how long it has
been going on,
this sounds like something to be concerned with,

Kristin, please see your doctor immediately. My mother has been reading
this site and sent your post to me. She has Multiple Sclerosis and says it
sounds like MS, not a stroke. Please seek some medical attention.

OMG, Kristin! I am so very concerned with you right now. I hope you have
already been seen by medical personnel. Please update as soon as you are
treated and feeling better. My daughter has paralysis of one side of her
body at the age of 4 and it was from a malformation in her brain that was
much like an aneurysm. The symptoms that you are having are not something
to take lightly. They could be caused by a number of things. I will be
praying for you!<><

KRISTIN'S ANGEL HERE. WHAT SHE HAS IS A INJURY AS A RESULT FROM A FALL
ABOUT 7 MONTHS AGO. THAT IS CAUSING THE NUMBNESS.

Well, I have suffered with numbing since surgery off and on. My Doc. told
me this happens with some people but he really did'nt Know why. I went for
my year blood work and they found out that my thiamin level was low which
can cause numbing. I take vit. B1 to help. But you should check with your
doc. asap.
