Question:
Having problems with throwing up mucus - graphic
Hi! I am 10 weeks post op and recently I have been having a bad time with mucus. Most days I start to gag and bring up some mucus. No food just the mucus. Tonight a big clump of mucus came up. Also I have a problem with saliva. I am constantly having to spit out saliva. It seems like everytime I spit it out a couple of seconds later I need to spit again. This never happened pre-op with me. Does anybody have the same the problem? Also, has anybody been diagnosed with gout post-op? — tracyr (posted on March 20, 2002)

Call your surgeon, you may be getting a stricture, which is easily fixed by
a dialation. Dont know muc about gout but drinking cranberry juice is
reportedly helpful.

I have a similar problem too, and asked a similar question a week ago. I'm
able to eat at all meals and get food down but typically once per day, 3-4x
per week, about an hour after I've eaten a "meal" (not a snack) I
end up with the overload of saliva and vomit up a big gob of mucus. I feel
much better afterwords. It seems to happen with spicy foods more than
other stuff. I'm taking it that my stomach ends up with this
"leftover" after it's done digesting the food and wants to get
rid of it. I'm only 3 1/2 weeks out, so I'm in a different place, but
wanted to let you know this. I have an app't with surgeon next week and
will be asking him about this too. Hope this helps!

I had the same problem from weeks 4-15 post-op. After I ate a bite of food
I would get a really full feeling and within 5 or 10 minutes my mouth
filled up with saliva and then I would have to throw up (not food but a
clear, foam liquid). I talked to my doctor and evidually I got the EGD to
check for a stoma restriction or closing. I was fine and they ended up
doing nothing. Eventually the throwing up ended and I am fine now. To be
safe, check with you doctor but maybe it is just a major adjusting period
to your new stomach like my was. Good luck.
