Question:
Anyone have a surgeon in the NY area who didn't wait until the day before your

consultation appointment to cancel? I am becoming increasingly frustrated, as 2 different surgeons "cancelled" my appointment, the day before it was to occur. To make matters worse, the only reason I knew my appointments had been cancelled, was that I was calling for instructions for the 2 hour drive I had to make, to get there. Of course they will rescehdule me, for 3 weeks later ... when I had to wait 6 weeks for the 1st appointment they cancelled. Does this happen often?! I am sorry if this question makes me sound rude, but you'd think that as a surgeon with a reputation to uphold, they would've at least called me? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!    — blank first name B. (posted on March 11, 2002)

If possible, find other surgeons...we shouldn't have to put up with mistreament from WLS docs, but unfortunately, many do because there is such a dearth of docs that do this surgery. However, in New York, I am sure there are other options. If you can't find another surgeon, than explain to the nurse/receptionist how far you are and that you MUST have the courtesy of a call if another cancellation occurs. Nothing wrong with asserting yourself. They wouldn't have a business if it weren't for you and your ins. co...good luck : )

Should you find another surgeon, or try the same one, ask if they would put you on a "short call list". That way if someone cancels, you can go in their place. Sometimes that will speed things up.

Dawn, I'm sure it is frustrating. I think they definately should squeeze you in faster than three weeks. And not calling was really unacceptable. But also realize it wasn't the surgeon who didn't call you it was his/her office staff. Although it isn't an excuse many are overworked and it is human nature to make mistakes. If your doctor has a good reputation I would just tell them they need to put you in faster. I personally wait several months for my first consultation because my doctor is very busy. I hate the receptionist in his office but the rest of the staff and my surgeon are the best. Good luck.

Thank you all for your supportive answers. I appreciate the feedback. It seems I have found a surgeon that is always very busy, and calling around, I found that some of the other surgeons in my area have a waiting list for an appointment.... in July. I guess a little perspective in life works wonders, I shall not complain, but just hang in there, until April. :) p.s. Without this site, and all of its members, I would've never found my way into gastric bypass surgery. Everyone on this site is an inspiration to me, and with each day, my hopes are growing.
