Question:
Okay - The hair loss has started, but I was not expecting this...
I started lossing my hair and I was prepared for that. But my whole scalp hurts like I have parted my hair wrong. If I ever comb my hair it hurts. I have cowlicks popping up all over the place and even my eyebrows are growing every which way. I have a lot of hair so I can deal with the loss, but any ideas how to deal with everythine else. — Kathy P. (posted on February 28, 2002)

Are you taking your vitamins? My surgeon stongly says to take your
vitamins to prevent that. A lady in my support group had stopped taking
her vitamin and expeirenced hair loss. When she began to take them it stop
and hair regrowth started. My own expeirence was an eating disorder I had,
(buleimia), caused a great deal of hair loss. When I stopped doing that my
hair grew back. Check with yor doctor if it continues.

I lost a lot of hair about 2 years ago. It happened to my sister at the
same age, so I assume this was just a genetic thing. (I was still pre-op.)
When my hair was falling out, my scalp was hurting constantly. It burned.
My hair wouldn't fall right because so much of the hair it used to fall on
was missing. But my scalp showed no outward sign of irritation at all (not
red or flaky or anything). It just hurt all the time! I don't know what
causes the pain and burning and neither did the 4 doctors I went to about
it!

I had a lot of hair loss post op from months 2-8. I also had extreme scalp
pain whenever my hair moved or I would puxh it to one side.(the description
of "parted my hair wrong" fits perfectly!! It felt like pins and
needles. I posted about this back then and got no one who had experienced
this. I, like anon., went to 4 doctors (surgeon, PCP, gyn, dermatologist)
and I think the scalp pain really had them puzzled. It did eventually go
away when the hair loss stopped. My hair is still thin at the ends, but I
have millions of 3 inch "sprouts" all over. Fortunately I wear my
hair in a simple style pulled back with a head band. It conceals those
sprouts and has worked well for me. I am looking forward to a new style
once those sprouts are long enough. I can't help you per se, but I wanted
to comment because I thought I was alone back then. Shelley

P.S. I wanted to mention that I did EVERYTHING nutritionally to help with
the hair loss/pain. Nothing made a difference. I had all of my protein,
zinc, biotin,Vit.C, multivitamin, calcium, B12, EVERYTHING!! I am convinced
that you will either lose your hair or not. (BTW- my surgeon feels the
same). I did use the NIOXIN products (including the scalp treatment).
While, it did zippo for my hair loss, I did like the way my hair felt and
looked when I used their products. What I am saying is, don't feel like
there is something you should be doing to help with this problem.
Sometimes, you can not fix it and don't feel guilty about that. Shelley
