Question:
How helpful are Nioxin and similar shampoos?
I am 10 weeks post op and have noticed that I have already started with hairloss. My surgeon tells me that I am getting plenty of protein, and he doesn't recommend anything else. But, it's not his hair!! Now that I think of it, he doesn't have much hair!! Anyway, I am looking for some input from those who have used Nioxin and similar products for their hair loss. I've always had some, as I have pretty long hair, but I would say the loss has double - trippled what I normally have, and I'm nowhere near the 4 months that most people seem to be at when they start with the hair loss. Any other input would also be appreciated. — tlg6056 (posted on December 27, 2000)

Nioxin is a wonderful product. If used daily it will keep your hair from
falling out after 45 days.It does not promise to grow hair back-but to keep
you from losing any more. My mom used it when she was on chemo- and
luckily, kept the hair she had. The phone # to Nioxin
is:1-800-628-9890.They can tell you what salon carries it in your area. By
the way, I am using it now, (4 months post- op), and my hair has stopped
falling out. Good Luck!

I use nioxin and love it. I had extremely thick hair before surgery. I
should have been using nioxin all along it really did stop hair loss.
Cutting your hair also helps to stop loss from the weight of your hair
pulling on itself. good luck.

I have used Nioxin for the last year due to excessive scalp flaking from
dry skin related to hypothyroidism. I love it! I am currently talking
to hairdressers about which regime to use and when to start it pre-op so
that I can keep my hair for the most part. By the way, I always know when
my thyroid is off by how much hair is in the drain. My doctor thinks I'm
nuts, but he is allmost bald!

Hi Tammy. My hair has always been naturally VERY fine and VERY thin
(thank you mom and gramma!). I started using Nioxin about 6 years ago and
I absolutely swear by it. I had my open RNY last March and I honestly
believe I would have been practically "hairless" today had I not
been using my Nioxin products. . Nioxin doesn't "cause"
regrowth...but, by making your scalp and the hair you do have very healthy,
it does limit hairloss and "encourages" new growth. Even with
it's usage, however, I did notice a limited amount of loss but not nearly
the amount I believe I would have had, had I not used the products. I
also watched and met my protein goals and took additional suppliments
(zinc, biotin and a specially formulated "hair" vitamin) to help
combat the anticipated loss. So far, so good and I'm nearly 10 months post
and down 93#. Check with your beautician to find out where you can get it.
I get it at cost (a considerable savings) from a friend (who is a
beautician and does my hair) because she understands my financial
situation. Hope this advice helps. Good luck and God bless. cj
