Question:
Is there a difference in pain when you don't chew well as opposed to dumping?
For two months now, I thought I was lucky...I could eat whatever I wanted. Now, twice in the last week, I've had cramps. The first time was with Taco Bell beans and it was the third time I had eaten them post op. The cramps were mild and located in the abdomen below my waist. Today, it was after eating fairly tender beef jerky (first time with this brand)...I was in a hurry because I hadn't eaten and needed to take my daughter to the doctor. Well, I had pretty bad cramps in my stomach for about an hour. I haven't had any nausea or vomiting, sweats, shakes or heart palps. I think I may have swallowed some jerky that wasn't chewed well enough. Or could this be dumping? — Allie B. (posted on October 2, 2000)

If you aren't chewing well enough you'll feel pain just below your breast
bone. It sounds like what you're experiencing is too low to be that.
Sometimes I get gas cramps in the area you describe but it is relieved when
I pass it. If you continue to have this pain you might want to check with
your doc just to be sure it isn't anything serious.

Dumping is what you described that you didn't have. Abject misery, but not
pain. Sounds like you blocked with the jerky. I haven't touched the stuff
for 6 yrs. I blocked early on with a piece of bacon that I chewd &
chewed & chewed. I might have chewed it, but it didn't break down. I
know now to spread doubtful things across the roof of my mouth to check and
see if they just became thinner, but is still one unit or if they broke up
into pieces. If there is ANY doubt, it goes in a napkin, in my bare hand,
in the parking lot. It does NOT go into my pouch. Ow. Ow. Ow.
