Question:
When not eating carbs, do you feel tired, weak, wimpy?
I was doing really well on eating the right foods before the holidays. Since the holidays I've been eating a lot of high carb foods. Pretzels, popcorn, buttered noodles, even some desserts. I've now hit a plateau and have decided to start fresh and do the Adkins style meal plan. I've been doing this for the last 2 weeks. Now in the last 2 weeks, I've noticed that I just feel dead tired and wimpy/weak. My co-worker said that with the Adkins diet, during the induction phase, that happens. Your body is withdrawing from the carbs. Has anyone else had this happen to them? — TLLessor (posted on January 29, 2004)

I find I feel dead tired and whimpy when I HAVE eaten too many carbs.

I have heard this response does happen when starting induction. I agree
with the previous poster - a bagel in the morning is like taking a
sleeping pill or something - carbs really make me feel sleepy and s-l-o-w.

About 2 years ago i did Sugarbusters (which is similar to Atkins). When I
started (or had to RE-start!) and gave up the carbs I called it detoxing
because I felt horrible. When I didn't have carbs I was cranky and weak
and tired and headachy...it took me a week or two every time to get over
the yuckies.
Sorry you feel bad!

I have also been eating wrong since the holidays. When I eat wrong I have
no energy and just want to lie around after I get home from work. Last
week I started eating like I am suppose to and felt so much better after
one day. The carbs and sugar make me feel tired and the protein makes me
feel good and have lots of energy. 12/12/02 – 213/132/125.

i have been just terrible over the holidays. I noticed over the last
couple of days since I made a concerted effort to go high fiber on the
carbs i do and add more vegies and fruit that i have felt better. I think
there is a lot to that.

I am aprox 7 weeks post op and was doing real well, then I started to feel
shakey, tired and weak, I called my staff at the surgeons office and told
them what I was eating and that I had cut my carbs (all carbs) WAYYYYYY
down.. I was told that that too can make you feel this way.. That everyone
needs a little good carbs, when I added a little fruit (banana) I began to
feel much better...Just goes to show you that too much of ANYTHING is not
good... best of luck..!!!!

Are you still eating fruits and vegetables? They should pick you up a bit.

I have heard that happening to people. I think they call it the Atkin's
Flu. Just keep on and it gets better...

This is also documented in the South Beach Diet. It is also said that
carbohydrates can be addicting, making you want more. Carbohydrates do not
provide you with that long-lasting full feeling like protein does. When
you choose carb, choose the low glycemic ones (the ones which take longer
to digest), and stay away from white, or overly processed carbohydrates.
If you want some potato, choose sweet potato over white; if you want bread,
choose multi-whole grain bread. You should be feeling better soon, hang in
there.

I think this is an example of the all or nothing mentality that got me
morbidly obese. I truely believe that moderation in all thing is the real
answer. While we do not need sugary desserts, pretzels or popcorn, some
carbs are necessary for ME to feel good. By this I do not mean dive into a
plate of Christmas cookies, that will mke me feel like poo poo, (no matter
hoe good they taste) I do mean, eat some fresh steamed veggies, a piece
of fruit, a slice of high fiber whole grain bread. the fiber does fill you
up and stay with you. processed white flour & sugar products do not
fill you up.
