Question:
CONSTIPATION and WEIGHT GAIN
It has been 3 1/2 years since my RNY surgery. I lost 120 pounds at first and then gained about 20 pounds back( which I needed to do since I was too thin). I then maintained my weight for about 2 years. In the past year the scale has climbed another 45 pounds (65 total now). I am usually constipated and usually don't go for 5-7 days at a time. I heard that sometimes after a while people get a partial blockage from scar tissue causing the food to stay in their system longer than it should, causing them to gain weight as a result. Please advise me as I am in a panic and don't want to gain all my weight back!!! I'm already half way to gaining it all back!!! — marcia B. (posted on September 16, 2003)

As a longterm post-op you know it's time to call the doctor to discuss the
weight gain and the constipation. Good luck!

I too have been having severe constipation with water retention and was
impacted over the weekend. It was one of the worst pains in the world.
After calling my surgeon they realized I had too much calcium in my system.
They had me on a calcium supplement 1000 mg, taking tums, taking my
multivitamin with calcium in it, and I am drinking 2 cups of skim milk a
day. The nurse told me to stop the supplement and give it a few days.
Maybe you should check this out.

Any time you're not going for 5-7 days, it's time to talk to the doctor.
