Question:
Has anyone experienced this? I am so afraid of over eating

I am so afraid of over eating that I am actually not eating enough. I am averaging one meal a day and half of the time that won't stay down. All foods with the exception of soup hurts my stomach. I prefer to drink most of the day because I am always thirsty. I am very good about getting in most of my vitamins and protein daily, however I know I am not eating enough food. I am 12 weeeks post-op and down 60 or more lbs. I really need some suggestions on how to eat at this point- especially with a busy schedule.    — lyndaleigh (posted on June 18, 2003)

Hon, you really do need to eat - it is important. Have you spoken with your surgeon about not keeping food down and about what you should be eating? I would suggest that you do so ASAP, if you haven't. At 12 weeks, I could eat just about anything but chicken, and eggs. But you might try cottage cheese, string cheese, tuna, salmon, other baked fish, soft, well-cooked vegetables, scrambled eggs, refried beans with cheese, baked potato loaded with cheese and bacon. These are just some suggestions. Eat just a few bites to see how it sits. And if something makes you sick, don't give up on it - it might work great next time. Good luck.

Honey what you are is afraid. I have said over and over this journey is mental. We took eating for granted for so long that now it is all consumming. You have to eat. You need to keep the furnace stoked so that you can burn. If not your fuel will sit there. You must eat. It is okay you will still loose weight. I had to learn the same way you are right now. It is safe and ok to eat. Make the right choices but MAKE CHOICES. You have to keep trying and see what works for you. Our mind is a very very very powerful thing but you have to now adjust and settle in mentally. You can do this. You will loose weight. Relax and enjoy the decision you made to have WLS it is wonderful and it works. You must work to and that means eating so you body stays healthy so you can enjoy the journey. It really is a mind game isn't it? Don't be afraid to eat- you can count the calories if that would make you feel better. At 3 months post-op, you should be getting in about 600 - 800 calories a day. I'm hoping since you say that you get in most of your protein daily that you are drinking a few shakes a day. Thats good and probably why you are losing well. But eventually, the body is going to realize that you are not feeding it enough and it will slow the weight loss down to a crawl. Your energy level will also sag as you aren't stoking the body with the fuel from food it needs. Your one meal a day that doesn't sit right, may be that you are overeating or eating too quickly or the wrong things. Perhaps you also have a partial stricture. Ask your surgeon to check it out-at 3 months post-op you should have a varied diet and be able to eat almost anything. As for suggestions on what to eat-I always carry protein bars in the purse for a quick snack or meal. At work, if you have a fridge, yogurt and cheese sticks, or peanut butter on crackers make nice snacks. Lunch is usually 1/2 a meat sandwich, though at 3 months post-op, I took off the top layer of bread! But please eat...and don't be afraid. This journey should be fun and your just getting started. Enjoy it.

Hi! I go through that quite a bit. It is actually pretty normal... I just make sure I get my protien in, and when I want solid food, I eat it. Read my profile for the diet I follow! I am 18 months out and down 210 lbs! :~) Lap RNY
