Question:
Am having sharp/burning pain in upper right side of abdominal area.
Had gallbladder out years ago. Had open RNY 4 weeks ago. Was doing really well until started throwing up this last week. Any ideas what's going on? The area is kind of puffy, could it be a hernia? Thanks for any help/advice offered. — Melinda L. (posted on March 29, 2003)

You should call your doctor immediately. Not trying to scare you, but you
should never second guess what could be wrong when it comes to being post
op from RNY. My friend had the same thing happen where she was having pain
and did not think it was too serious and it ended up being a hernia that
was causing her bowels to die. She is fine now, but if she had waited any
longer she would have ended up without a bowel and using a cholostemy bag
for the rest of her life. PLEASE CALL YOUR DOCTOR..Even if you think it is
minor call him or her to be sure. I hope it turns out to be nothing. God
Bless.

I agree with the previous post... Call your Dr. It could be a possible
hernia. On a less serious note.. It could be what I had and that was
constipation. It was on the right side of my incision and it felt like
somebody had taken an open flame to my skin. It was extremely painful to
bend over or even have clothing touch my skin. Best thing to do is call the
doc. He/She is going to be able to give you the best advice. Too, if you
can't get ahold of him/her and the pain worsens don't hesitate to go to the
ER. That is what they are there for. Even if they send you home with simple
constipation. :) Good luck!
