Question:
What do you eat in the afternoon to curve those munchies?
My kids come home from school around 3:30 and all I want to do is eat, esp anything with sugar :( Why is that? I do good all day and even after I cure my mucnhie attack but I'm not sure what I should eat to stop eating all the bad things. Like today, I made sugar cookies and ate two fo them. This makes me so angry when I am done eating, because I know better but I do it again tomorrow. Any help? — Robin A. (posted on January 21, 2003)

I have the same problem, but I'm at work, so it's a little easier to
control. The weekends are hell, however. I find that if I keep drinking, I
don't eat as much. I drink sugar free koolaid, which tastes like a treat,
even though it's not. Another thing I did, was stop buying white sugar. I
can't have that in my house, or I'll bake cookies. If the kids want a
treat, they eat my sugar free popsicles, or fudgesicles. Or, they eat an
eggo waffle or something. Don't temp yourself. Get rid of sugar-y type
stuff, and start feeding your family sugar free, or no sugar added. :)
Take care,
Diana

Hi there, Robin! Although I don't get hungry too often only when it's that
time of the month, I do get cravings for snacks and rather than stuffing a
few chips in my mouth, this is what I've tried.... I buy those small bags
of turkey pepperoni and have exactly one serving, which is about 17 slices
and that's 9 gr of protein there. Or ( I learned this from a friend who
did this to calm her pregnancy cravings) I buy fresh strawberries and
freeze them, when I have a severe craving for sweets, I just pop a couple
in my mouth and crunch, crunch, crunch! If you have just 4 strawberries
that's about 8 calories and less than 2 gr of carbs. You could try jerky
or pork rinds, just a suggestion. Vi open RNY 9/23/02 down 93 lbs

When I used to do only 2 protein drinks a day, one was morning, and one was
right smack where you're talking. I've read it has to do with blood sugar,
and then it's an odd time of day. Morning is over, gearing up for dinner,
etc. So, if you're doing your protein drink later, try moving it up. If
you're not doing a protein drink (no milk, no sugar), whey protein cubs
hunger/munchies terrifically.

No where is it written that children have to come home to fresh baked
cookies. It will not ruin them for life to have sugar free Jello or
pudding or fruit or those nasty pop tarts or anything else that is not as
tempting as home baked cookies. On the other hand, if 2 cookies don't
tempt you to go to 8 cookies, it will not destroy you weight loss effrts.
But, for most of us, this is only one step to failure.

When I have the desire for a major food fest I eat the Good Humor sugar
free pops. They are in a varity pack of orange/grape/cherry and are 15
calories each. Usually I stop at 4, sometimes 6 when I'm really feeling
ravenous for sweets.

I would beat yourself up over it! Whenever I have a craving I give into it
and have a niblle or two and go on my merry way. The way I look at is:
Atleast I didn't eat all of them like in the old days. I am 7 months out
and still continue to lose weight.

My favorite is Dannon Light 'n Fit yogurt with a few teaspoons of grapenuts
mixed in. I usually buy the big container of yogurt and for a snack scoop
out about 2 oz. and sprinkle on my grapenuts, it's sweet and gives you the
crunch to satisfy the munchies.

how about a slice of turkey or roast beef from the deli. I usually have an
apple in the after noon, sepecially on the was home from work, it is
filling, tastes good, lots of fiber, no fat, and holds me for several
hours. My favorite is Gala, or yellow delicious.

There are several things you can try. A chocolate protein shake with 1/2 a
banana in it, or even 1 tsp of peanut butter is a good sweet snack. Or if
you want the candy type of treat, try a protein bar. My favorites are 1/2
of a Detour bar (really does taste like a snickers bar) or the Balance Gold
protein bars (Rocky road rocks-like a chewy brownie with nuts in it).
Also, sometimes I save 1/2 my lunch and eat the rest later in the afternoon
when I get hungry again. I also agree with the others that say don't
bake!! If I baked, I know my weaknesses, and I could NOT resist. Kids are
actually quite good when you train them from an early age. My sister has
trained her kids from the time they were babies to know the difference
between healthy and unhealthy snacks. When they get home from school, they
get to choose a healthy snack of their choice.
