Question:
Has anyone around 400 lbs. had only 100 cm's bypassed....
and still been succesful? I started at 395, my dr. only does 100 cm. He said that insurances don't want to pay for more than that. Anyway, I'm a little concerned becauase from what I have read, people my size usually have close to 200 cm bypassed. Thanks, — Amber F. (posted on January 11, 2003)

Amber - I started at 427 and had only 75 cm bypassed (which is standard for
the surgeons at the Hospital of the Univ. of Pa.). I have lost 139 pounds
since my surgery on 7/17 - so I guess you would say I have been
successful...JR

I haven't heard of anyone bypassed 200cm's even at your weight. I am 432
and my doctor wants to bypass 150cm. However, due to insurance I may end
up at 100cm which I am scared about. But now that I read John's post I am
less concerned. I think it just means you need to really follow the rules
closely to get off all your excess weight and keep it off. The little more
malabsorptive component of the 150cm bypass supposedly provides better long
term probabilty of keeping it off. But I really think it comes down to how
one has dealt with the change and altered their eating habits.

Amber, I had a proximal RNY on 07/08/02. I started at 5'5" and 388lbs.
I know weigh 269lbs, for a loss so far of 119lbs! I am thrilled with my
progress, and I'm sure you will be too. Just remember, if you follow your
doctor's instructions and pay attention to the food you put in your mouth
you are in control. It took me a while to realize that. I just said,
"Gee, I hope I keep losing." Now I know that if I make the effort
(water, good food choices, and yes even a little exercise) I WILL KEEP
LOSING! If I can do it you can too!
