Question:
What alcololic drinks are ok for us to drink??
I'm not a big drinker at all but OCCASIONALLY would like to have a drink with my hubby. Pre-op I liked Bacardi Rum & diet coke. Is this ok to drink? Is there a site that tells the sugar content in alcohols?? I had Lap RNY and would like to hear what other people can tolerate. — Kim B. (posted on June 25, 2002)

I had the samr surgery as you did and I am 3 months postop. I can tolerate
Bartles and James wine coolers pretty good. But i really only drink half
now because of the size of my pouch and the fact I get drunk really quick
now!! GOOD LUCK!

I've only had alcohol once , at about 3 months post-op. It was two small
glasses of champagne, and its true, you do get drunk faster. Had a great
buzz!

Have only drank once since surgery 6 months ago, I had White Russians
(milk, Vodka & Kaluha) I handled this really well did not get sick at
all, that night or in the morning and I had quite a few.

I'm not a huge drinker, but do enjoy a drink every now and then. I've not
had any problem with anything I've tried - white wine, vodka/cranberry
juice, even margaritas. Just miss my beer a little, the bubbles are too
tough on the tummy.

One in awhile I like a Grasshopper. A week ago I tried one (I'm about 14
months post op). I decided to mix my own at home as I figured the alchie
would knock me a## over teakettle. Well I never felt a thing. Hmmmm. Not
any kind of buzz at all.

I pretty much stick to wine, usually red, sometimes white becasue I don't
drink juice and I don't do carbonation. If when you say
"tolerate" you mean dumping, I'm not a good person to ask as I
don't think I dump at all. But, yes...I certainly get drunk quicker. Two
glasses of wine and I am pretty buzzed...before surgery I could have six,
seven beers before getting that way. The weird thing is that the buzz goes
away pretty soon. I'm a bit ashamed to admit this, but even so, I don't
always stop at two.

There's always one negative answer, so I'll give it. tsk tsk
I am a little over 6 months post and haven't had any alcohol YET. We were
told it does not get broken down since there is no stomach. It goes
straight to the liver and can cause major liver problems. They recommend
waiting at least a year and then sticking with wine.

Actually the liver story is a WLS myth. As you can see in my previous
answer, I do indulge once in a while...so I specifically brought up this
question with my doc last week. He said I shouldn't have more than one
drink at at time...even if it's one drink three times a week - and that is
strictly because of the caloric intake and becasue it will affect us so
much faster than before. After hearing that, I needed more clarification,
so I said straight out "How does this affect my body, is it harmful to
my organs", and he said "No more than before surgery". Now
I am not saying that everyone should go out and get hammered every
night...but a few drinks here and there over the course of time is not
going to be harmful to your liver. Live life. ~Paula M -91 pounds Open RNY
