Question:
I was told by my insurer that my PCP needs to send to send a letter of med. necessity
to them. I was told my Dr. would handle all the paper work. It was never mentioned to me about my PCP. Now Im worried that this is going to hold up my surgery, tentatively scheduled for 6-18. Anyone else know of this with Keystone Health Plan East. — diane M. (posted on April 4, 2002)

If you don't think your PCP will write it, write it for him, take it to him
and ask him to send it in. That way you know he knows about it... Good
luck in your journey.

If you have an HMO, your PCP always has to be involved in the process.
Usually though, he has to justify the medical necessity of referring you to
the surgeon, once that is done, the surgeon can request the surgery. Good
luck. I liked the other response, write your own letter and ask your doctor
to sign it. That way you know it gets done. My PCP would love it if
someone did that for him!
