You make sure that your surgeon and the nursing staff knows that
you are allergic to Aspartame and when you are in the hospital
you find out what's in everything you eat or drink. When You get home,
and you can prepare your own foods with Splenda. Splenda is an all
natural
sugar free sweetner. No after taste! I also buy Suzanne Somers sweetner
called Somersweet. YOu can cook with it...even carmelize with it. It's
fantastic.
I get it from www.hsn.com which is the website for the Home Shopping
Network.
I find that her whole weight loss program meshes quite nicely with wls.

Not wanting to use artifical sweetners is the main reason I switched from
the RNY to the VBG. I use Splenda and have found a few protein supplements
that use Stevia - a natural sweetner. I spent A LOT of time preop
considering permanent lifestyle changes brought about by the different
procedures. I had to be honest with myself about what I could/would do and
not do. Although I am not allergic to Aspertaine (and I never did like
saccarine), I did not like the idea of using the artifical sweetners for
the rest of my life. Definitely discuss this with your nutritionist and
surgeon. Good luck!!

I also have the same problem with fake sugars. I did try Splenda and had a
mild reaction. I found one that doesn't however. The name is Stevia. Its
a natural herb that is very sweet. Its is in green paxs just like the
other fakes have thier own colored pax. I purchased it at a health food
store. Not to expensive either. I had to make my own jello post-op due to
the probs that sugar free products cause me.

Jeannie, I am allergic to Nutra Sweet and have had no issues with diet. I
use Splenda to make Kool-Aid and skip things like Crystal light. V-8 Splash
and Tropican Twisters have diet versions made with Splenda that are yummy.
I make Kool-Aid popsicles from KA with Splenda too. Believe me, finding a
popsicle tray in December wasn't easy, but I finally did. There are plenty
of products out there without NS, so just eat those instead. I'm 6 weeks
today and have yet to have jello. I just had other stuff instead.
Make sure the surgeon and the hospital know of your allergy. At the
hospital *demand* an allergy band. I had a band, but was still brought
Nutra Sweet products every meal. My hubby or I would tell them, they'd
check the band, take the tray out and bring it back with just broth and
fruit juice.

Use sweet and low. It is made of sacharin.
I have a sensitivity to Nutrisweet too, but not as severe as you do. It
gives me headaches.
