Question:
Wont the high sugar in fruits and fruit juices make you dump

I'm 8 wks post rny and have not eaten or drank fruit, because of the high sugar and I dont want to dump. I'm having a big constipation problem, and thought I might drink some prune juice, but the sugar content was so high I didnt buy it. I read others eating and drinking fruit, is there a secret to not dumping on it?    — Julia M. (posted on October 21, 2001)

My experience has been that "natural" sugars such as found in fruit(fructose) have been alright for me. I just have them in moderation. I have chosen not to drink fruit juice because of the calories but I would imagine that fruit juices sweetened with natural sugars would be ok. I think the sugar to stay away from is refined sugar like white granulated sugar, brown sugar, confectioner sugar, corn syrup etc. Hope this helps!!!!

The best fruit juice I have found is the low-sugar V-8 splash. It tastes great and isn't so high in calories and sugar.

I have never dumped from fruit or fruit juice, but everyone is different. I have even used fructose in baking with pretty good results. Try something high in fiber and water like watermelon. It might help loosen you up. I don't drink fruit juice because it is a caloric liquid and research seems to indicate that this is one of the failure points. I have, however, used a couple of ounces of warmed prune juice to try to relieve constipation. Just try it and see. Look at it this way, if you dump it will be over in 20 minutes but the constipation will go on and on . . .

I'm 6 months post-op lap/rny and drink orange juice almost every day with no problem. Like the other poster I water it down. I've been drinking fresh apple cider this weekend (not watered down) and have had no problem. I find that I don't dump on natural sugars found in fruit and fruit juices. If you try fruit juice, sip it slowly at first until you get a feel for if and how much your body can handle. If you do it that way you should have no problem. BTW, fresh apple cider may be good for your "problem" too.

i have only been able to eat unsweetened applesauce since surgery 7 weeks ago. I attempted an one inch square of pineapple last night. chewed it and spit out the pulp;nauseous all night. Everyone is different. Good Luck.

Hi - this was a question I asked the nutrition folks before surgery. They said that natural sugar does not cause the dumping problem - refined sugars (including "raw" sugar which is still refined) does. For the first few weeks they suggest diluting no sugar added apple or grape juices 50/50 with water. I had open RNY on 10/16 (5 days post op), home for 2. All day yesterday I could only handle no sugar added apple juice w/water; today I am into the no sugar added fruit juice bars (frozen). No problems whatsoever with either.

I have been having orange juice since about 6 weeks post op. I searched high and low for one that I could stand that wasn't too sweet. I find that Minute Maid Pulp Free is the absolute best. Early post op I was craving something tart and this was perfect. It has a little tartness and is not too sweet. I have tried MANY others and I find them to be way too sweet. Also, I find that when I drink a glass of OJ, I will frequently have a BM within 20 minutes. It works great. Shelley
