Question:
Will my abdomen eventually get smaller?
Hi, I have lost over 100 pounds and my abdomen before surgery was very large, and even though I have lost over 100 pounds and starting at 400 pounds, my abdomen has gone down quite a bit, but my surgeon said I will need to have the excess skin surgically taken off next year, and to me it is still BIG!!! It is in the way of making me feel totally happy for myself. Will this go away even more as I lose more weight? I walk all the time and ecercise. Just curious. Any input is appriciated. Thank You! — [Anonymous] (posted on July 10, 2001)

It is likely that if your surgeon thinks you will need skin removal then
you will require it. Many people can tone up after weight loss, but skin
that has been stretched has a hard time snapping back especially if it was
stretched far or if the person is older and has less elasticity in their
skin. Do you exersize of course and see how much you can bring back to
normal. Many insurance companies will cover the skin removal surgery
especially if you start to have other problems as a result of it hanging
such as rashes.

It sounds like you will eventually need surgery to remove the
excess skin. The vast majority of insurers will pay for the
surgery to remove your apron.......especially if they paid for
the wls.
