Question:
after i eat, i sometimes experience reflux

i am 2 months post op RNY distal and about six times in the last couple of weeks i have experienced some type of reflux. sometimes i throw up from it and sometimes i just dry heave, and most of the time i get a mucousy discharge that comes up. is this normal or should i call my surgeon?    — [Anonymous] (posted on July 9, 2001)

That's not reflux. That is your body reacting to a plugged outlet. You've eaten too much, too fast, or something too big to pass through. It usually is accompanied by pain and lots of mucous! You need to chew extremely well, don't swallow anything with 'skins' without making sure they are chewed up finely. Relax when you eat. Take small bites. RNY cures true reflux which was always accompanies by gastric acids (notice the lack of gastric acid now?) Hope this helps.
