Question:
Does it really make a difference in the appearance of your scar whether they use..

steri strips, staples, or sutures. I am afraid that if they use sutures or staples that the Scar from an Open procedure will appear much larger. Should I request steri strips or subcutaneous sutures? How are you scars after surgery? Thanks for any info that you give me!    — imano1momy (posted on May 12, 2001)

I was literally cut with a jagged can lid (don't ask--I can just tell you don't be opening large cans and jabbering at the same time!), and the scar is inivisble. And the most carefully constructed vertical incisions still went keloid. Since I've been injured and had surgeries, the method of damage nor the method of sealing made no difference to my particular skin type. My husband had 2 surgeries in 5 days AND a seroma at day 10, and his scar (vertical) is almost invisible. It just ain't fair, you know? Look yourself over--how did you scar in the past? Other surgeries? Booboos? And finally, it may not be your choice, so good not to stress about it.

As soon as my doctor said it was ok, I started rubbing my scar with vitamin e oil, lotions, shea butter and anything wlse I could think of and it was looking pretty good but still really pink. Then about 7 months after surgery I had some moles removed at the dermitologist and he gave me some samples of Mederma to rub on the scars so they would be lighter and not "puff" out, he said even though my surgery scar was over six months old to give it a try. The stuff is amazing! I bought a whole tube of it at Walmart and my scar is much lighter and fading fast. Mederma is a gel you rub in a couple of times a day...it even smells good! You can look it up on the web for more info. Good luck and God Bless!

Hi Jessica ~ ~ I had an open rny on 3/19/01. I was closed up with glue & tape. To me this was the best. I have an 8in incision, but it is a very thin line & very smooth to the touch. The tape came off by itself in 7 days. I have been putting cocoa butter cream on it.
