Question:
Has anyone gained weight after RNY?
I am anxiously awaiting a surgery date for open RNY and have read stories of post-ops who had RNY regaining weight after two plus years. I am a military wife and will be having surgery at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. I don't have a choice of lap vs open or RNY vs DS. They are currently performing the open RNY.....so this is what I'll have. It frightens me read the potential of regaining weight. I want this to be a permanent solution and never have consider a revision down the road. I am open to any helpful suggestions or advice. — perezrdh (posted on April 16, 2001)

I am still pre-op, but I'll tell you what my PCP told me. He worked with a
surgeon doing RNY prior to becoming an internal medicine doctor. During
his work with RNY patients, he found that some would sabotage themselves by
snacking after two years and would gain some weight back. He told me that
this surgery is a good tool, but that the way to really make it work is to
spend a lot of time with the dietician and maybe a psychologist to get
eating patterns under control before that two year mark. He said as long
as I eat regular meals and try not to graze all day, I should maintain the
weight loss after the first two years.
