Question:
Will I ever be able to wear shorts/bathing suits?
I just saw a Plastic Surgeon for the first time since my surgery. I was really looking forward to getting work done on my legs because as they are now I wouldnt want to be seen in shorts or wearing a bathing suit. I have two problems: 1) excess skin on my inner thighs and 2) large calves (18"). Both of these conditions make me embarassed to wear anything but long dresses and pants. I am single, approaching 30 and live in an area where the sun is shining for most of the year (people actually wear shorts year-round). I was really hoping to one day have a normal body that I wouldnt have to be ashamed of but now that Ive lost weight Im stuck with legs that need to be hidden. The plastic surgeon said that the chances of my calves getting slimmer is minimal (the muscle is large from carrying excess weight for years) and that the skin on my thighs wont improve either because of my age. He said he could improve them with surgery but that I would have large amounts of scarring that would run the entire length of my thigh. I was thinking that to remove the skin they could perform the surgery in a way to make the scar be hidden away at the top of the thigh in the bikini area. Im really depressed and hope maybe to hear from someone in a similar situation who has answers on what I can do. I dont think I would bother with surgery if it left me with the scarring he showed me in pictures. I scar easily and dont expect it to heal well. If anyone out there can offer recommendations on what can be done for me I would appreciate it. Its been 1 1/2 years since my surgery. — [Anonymous] (posted on March 6, 2001)

I recently saw pictures of someone who had a medial & lateral thigh
lift, abdominoplasty, and mastopexy. The pics were taken in bra and
panties, and I saw no visible scar. I am going for my first plastic
consult on Thursday. Scarring is one of my questions. I'll be glad to
tell you what I find out.

The absolute BEST exercise for your legs (we are talking quads, hamstrings,
calves...everything) to firm, tighten, and strengthen (and yes, shrink) is
riding horses. I am not talking renting a horse for an hour trailride... I
mean really start taking riding lessons (english, preferably dressage or
huntseat) twice a week... lease a horse while you are learning and ride
daily or every other day. This is an excellent hobby, a great comfort, a
good social opportunity, and awesome exercise ... remember, there is also
the care involved... mucking stalls, lugging water, hay, grain bags,
grooming, cleaning saddles, raking out the riding ring and paddock....
these things will look great on you and make you feel good too. contact a
stable in your area or call your local 4-H or United States Pony Club to
find a barn near you that gives lessons. Best wishes :)
