Question:
Anyone join a gym?
I'm thinking about joining the Y, to start exercising. I'm down about 100 lbs but still weigh a little over 400 lbs. I want to do a cardio workout with a few days of weight training. Right now, aerobic exercise classes are out of the question as well as swimming(self concious issues). If anyone out there is a member of a gym, what type of equiment are you using and what is your workout routine. Any info will be appreciated. Jan — Jan M. (posted on March 1, 2001)

eliptical trainer(no harsh impact on joints, smooth rolling motion),
treadmill(walking is always a good way to get started), stationary bike(low
impact on joints), and weights(to help combat loose skin, and tone).

a rowing machine will also give you a good arm and leg workout with low
impact. Also, ask if your Y would consider a specialized class for low
impact aerobics and/or water aerobics for large-size individuals. Ys are
especially open to providing services for "non-traditional"
clients, ie. those of us who are gym rats.

I am ten months post-op, down 143 lbs to 212. I am a member of our campus
rec center. It's an excellent facility with a pool, sauna, racquetball and
basketball courts, walking/running track, cardio room, weight room, aerobic
room, and an expansion is coming this fall. A helluva facility for $10 a
month!

I am currently doing a mile on the treadmill and
3.5 miles on a stationary bike. They have a cardioglider, but I've been
apprehensive about trying it. I am going to weight train after another 12
lbs are gone. I went and toured a local gym first, but felt very
self-conscious. I feel very comfortable at the rec center. I only wish I
had started regular exercise sooner. I encourage you to find the
motivation to get moving! Best wishes.

I joined the Y with a family membership at the beginning of February mainly
because my hubby's gym membership was coming due and my 3 teens wanted to
do weight lifting, swimming etc. I told them that I was going to be having
surgery on 2/20/01 and was informed that they have a physical therapist,
and personal trainers that can help me get into shape at my own pace. Even
though I have yet to use the facilities, I feel it was the best investment
we ever made. I know that every Y is different, but it doesn't hurt to tell
them what you need and see if they can fulfil your needs.
