Question:
Is morbid obesity considered a pre-existing condition?
I am in the process of selecting an insurance company that will pay for WLS, but was wondering if morbid obesity was a pre-existing condition. I currently have an HMO and was looking to find a personal policy, like BC/BS of Florida as my secondary policy, to cover the surgery. Has anyone run into this problem? I would appreciate any info on ANY personal policy that covers bariatric surgery. — K. B. (posted on January 25, 2001)

I tried to get insurance for myself several years ago and because of my
weight, I would have to pay through the nose. They wanted a diet history
and weights at different ages. I felt that I was being discriminated
against. Good Luck in your search, I'm sure that there are some great
insurance companies out there!

the day after my first appointment with my surgeon, my company changed
insurers to BC/BS of Massachusetts. I didn't have any problems. Good luck

Yes it is a pre-existing!!! If you are geting insurance from your emplyoer
don't worry because they have to take and treat you with pre-existings.
Self insured is very different. It may be a lot harder and take longer to
have this surgery self insured but don't give up!!!!!
