Question:
I really need some insight on what long term post ops eat day to day.
My doctor has warned me if I don't watch what I eat and cut out the junk, that even though I am losing weight now that their will come a point where it will stop and I will regain. I need some ideals on your day to day meals and protein intake. Thanks! Shelly Lap RNY 1-21-00 down 85lbs — Shelly T. (posted on September 25, 2000)

I am very distal RNY and take 120-180g of protein SUPPLEMENT a day. I can't
take the risk of how much I may or may not absorb from food. At 6 yrs, I
still avoid milk & sugar (anything with more than 6g per MEAL), still
do not graze or drink with meals. Because I take so much protein
supplement, I rarely (maybe 3X per year?) crave, so I never feel like I'm
dieting at all. My weight has held steady. This is SO much easier than
the perpetual diet roller coaster I used to ride!

I am 2 1/2 years post-op and reached my goal today of 143 lbs. Down 143lbs.
So I guess that makes me 1/2 of myself. The only way I can maintain is by
keeping a totally honest daily food journal and never never miss a day. I
shot for 1800 calories per day and in reality range between 1600 -2300. I
eat just like any person with or without the surgery. I take my multi-vit
and calcium daily and eat oatmeal with a few walnuts every morning for
breakfast. One of those instant packets. I give myself 300 calories per day
of chocolate (because I can't live without it) and I try to always think
before I put anything in my mouth. If I don't love it, than I don't waste
my calories on it. The biggest lesson I have learned is "you do not
have to finish it." What works for me is small portions. I have
anything and I mean anything, but only a little bit. I think each person
has to find the method that will work for them. It has taken me 46 years
and major surgery, but I think I have finally found my personnal method. I
eat about 8 times per day but only about 150 -300 calories each time.
Sometimes it is protien, sometimes friut, sometimes pretzels, sometimes
vegies, sometimes a muffin, sometimes chocolate. I just try to get some of
each in every day. I am also a big Richard Simmons fan and his foodmover is
great. E-mail me anytime [email protected]. Sincerely, Cheryl
