Question:
150 cm?`

I seem to remember the surgeon saying he bypasses 150 (now heres where I don't remember whether he said cm, meters, feet, inches etc? haha....But when I asked him what he would call his surgery type since I read all these different terms on this site, he said his would be called distal. DOes this sound crazy?? Well I will ask him next week.    — Carole C. (posted on August 3, 2000)

Distal to my doc means 150cm or approx. 6 ft. Some doc go further but you may have problems with nutrients. Also my doc calls this the long arm RNY instead of distal.

Carole, yeah distal makes sense. Proximal and distal are descriptions of how far away from a fixed point the cut is made. In this case the fixed point is the stomach. Proximal is closer to the stomach whereas distal is further away. (For instance your hand is distal to your shoulder but your elbow is proximal). The usual amount of bypass length is 75 (proximal) to 150 (distal) centimeters. 2 and 1/2 centimeters equal 1 inch. Hope this helps. Donna

All in the eye of the doctor. To my doc, bypassing 10 FT is proximal, whereas my 18 FT is distal. Think in terms of numbers, not words. Very confusing!
