Question:
has anyone had braided hair extensions while having this or any other type of surgery
I am a black female, having surgery on july 20, 200. I am on the east coast of NC and have shoulder length thick and healthy hair, I only relax(straighten) it about every 6 weeks, that is what my stylist recommends. Because of the heat and humidity here and the fact that we are moving about a week after surgery, I don't want to have to "deal" with my hair...of course, I can always pull it back in a scrunchie, which is usally my "style" anyway. lol. Also, I am a little concerned that the braids may be too "heavy" for my hair if my hair thins out during the weight loss.... thanks for any input! Shelia Morgan — Shelia M. (posted on July 2, 2000)

Hello Sheila, Congratulations on having your Surgery soon. I'm a black
female almost 2 months post-op and I had extensions in my hair during
surgery. I decided that I wasn't going to feel like doing my hair, which is
shoulder length, so I decided to braid it. Believe me after Surgery you
won't feel like sitting to get it done either. I use human hair and my
braids are thin and light, I have no problem with them at all. If you can
manage to pull your hair back into a ponytail then do that. I think that
maybe you should have your own hair braid into something simple, so that
you won't have to fuss with brushing your hair. The ponytail doesn't always
stay perfect.

Hi Sheila,
I too am a black female and had medium extension in my hair so that I won't
have to deal with my hair after surgery. I didn't have any problem with my
hair being in braids. I am 3months post-op. I usually wear my hair in a
pony tail with a scrunchie.

Hey my sister...yes braiding your hair is fine for surgery and like the
women before me said it is also one less thing to worry about. I would even
suggest it due to the amount of sweating and tossing and turning we tend to
do. My stylist corn-rolled my hair then she crochets (spelling) human
braids. My hair grew and remained strong. Hair problems wont happen until
month 3 or 4 and even then it depends on the individual. I am having mine
put back in for my surgery which is on July 31st. I know of several women
who are post-op who say it was the best thing they could have
done....Praying for you all...Trina

Dear Sheila,
I am also a black female who had the surgery in February. I have worn
braids for over two years at one point in my life but not during the
surgery and at this moment. I truly beleive that you will be grateful not
to worry about you hair after you have surgery.
I am 5 months post-op and have not lost any hair. I can't say that will
happen to everyone though.
Good luck to you and God bless!

I am African American and six months post op. I had braids put in before
the surgery and kept them in for about a month after the surgery. I did not
feel like having to deal with my hair while trying to recouperate. Needless
to say my hair did come out drastically. So much that my beautican had to
cut it very low. I guess this is something we all must go through if we
have the surgery. Good luck and I would love for you to e-mail me from time
to time. I am from North Carolina as well.

HI SHELIA,
I KNOW THIS ANSWER IS TOO LATE, BUT HERE GOES ANYWAY. I HAD MY HAIR BRAIDED
AND INTERLOCKED WHEN I HAD MY C-SECTION AND I DIDN'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH
HAIR LOSS. MY RNY IS SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 17 AND I JUST GOT MY HAIR
BRAIDED AGAIN YESTRDAY. IT WILL BE ONE MORE THING OFF MY MIND TO NOT HAVE
TO WORRY ABOUT MY HAIR LOOKING RAGGED! :-) I'LL LET YOU KNOW HOW IT GOES.
