Question:
Has anyone had problems getting rid of the fluid?

I had my surgery last Tuesday. This week I was at the Dr. office with VERY swollen ankles and feet. The Dr. put me on Furosemide Oral 10MG. After 2 days of taking this I still have not lost any of the fluid. It hasn't even sent me to the bathroom any more than normal. I have taken this before in pill form and lost 10 pounds in 24 hours. I can't understand why it is not working for me now? Anyone have problems with Edema? What helped you get rid of it?    — Betty H. (posted on April 26, 2000)

Hi Betty, I have trouble with retaining water. When I came out of the hospital I was up fifteen lbs. My Doctor also gave me a water pill to take as needed. But the real key here is plenty of water, at least 64 oz. a day, more if you can get it in. Your sugar, free jellos, crystal light, all help with this too. Good to hear from you Betty.

I'm sorry to hear of your discomort. Is it possible that the Dr. you saw didn't know if the med given would be properly absorbed? You didn't say if the doctor was your surgeon (he would know)... and you didn't say what type of surgery you had (if it had any intestinal bypass included).

Hi Betty, Do you have any history of heart or kidney disease? Did you retain fluid pre-op? Has the physician ordered any tests to find out why you are retaining fluid? I would be interested to know why you are retaining fluid.

Betty...good to hear you are on the other side and doing good. Carin is right. I, too, had edema after surgery and my surgeon told me the key to getting rid of the fluid is to get more liquids in. Your body thinks it is not getting enough water/liquids so it is holding on to all it can get. You have to let it know that it is going to get all it wants. Hope this helps you out. Good Luck and hugs.
