Question:
For those people who are/were on oral meds for Type II diabetes ...

did your doctors tell you to stop taking them prior to the surgery? if so, how far in advance? and when did you start re-taking them, post-op? if ever? and how did you handle the size of the pills? [I'm on rezulin 400mg at bkft, 750mg glucophage & 10mg glucotrol XL at dinner ... plus lizinopril 2.5mg at dinner for high blood pressure.]    — Kathy H. (posted on March 17, 2000)

I was taking glacaphage, glipiziod, rezelin and nighttime insullin...after the surgery, my blood sugars are normal with no meds. when i was in the hospital it was high and they gave me insullin shots every so many hours..after the 4th day it was down and they stoped the shots...then home i went never to take another med for diabetes...note, i still have neropathy in my feet....so far no change, but stoped from getting worse for sure. write if you want more info. Hi, I was on gluocophage and gluocatrol and was told not to take them the morning of surgery and not to take them again until I went to my family doc and had my blood tested (about 2 weeks). I've never gone back on either med. My levels have been just fine and my diabetes GONE! Hope the same will be for you! I know I dreaded having to take those big pills with my new tummy! Good Luck. I was told to keep taking my meds all the way to the day of surgery. You would not want your diabetes out of control after a surgical procedure because it would inhibit your ability to heal well. Also after surgery, until you are able to swallow a good size gulp of water- you will need to crush your meds and eat them with a small amount of food (they used applesauce at my hospital). There is the possibility that you may not need the diabetes medicine at all either- within two days after my surgery I was off both insulin and glucophage. So you may have something to really look forward too! I am 5 months post op and my sugar stays between 70 and 120 without meds, insulin, or special diet! God really performs a miracle through this surgery!
