Question:
I'm having my first appt. with my Doctor to request a referral for WLS
What can I say to him to convince him that this is the right thing for me and to give me the referral to a Surgeon. This is a new Primary Care Doc and I don't know how he is aobut the WLS. My insurance ins Prudential HMO and they said they will ok it if he says it's medically necessary. I have HBP, degenerative arthiritis, and weigh about 345 at 5'5. I'm 38 years old with a 3 year old son that I want to play with and see grow up. I just have this terrible feeling that if I don't do this surgery i won't live too much longer. Any suggestions with what to use in my defense? Thanks, Shelli — Shelli M. (posted on February 21, 2000)

Hi Shelli, my pcp was totally against it, and after talking to her and
letting her know that I was very determined to have this done she started
my referals to the different doctors I had to see in order to see a
surgeon. Make sure that you go to him with lots of confidence in your
decision, and let him know that you are determined. You know that this
surgery will benefit your lifestyle and the longevity of your life, so let
him know that you are fully aware of that. Also, be prepared, be well
informed and assure him that you are well informed about wls and the
benefits and risks. But most of all be confident. Good luck, you'll do
great! mary

Go prepared! Do you homework and let him see you know about this
surgery and the risks. Have a lists of the diets you have been
on both on your own and doctor supervised. Good luck and let us
know how it goes.

Take as much information regarding weight loss surgery with
you as possible and make him take the time to go over it
with you. My primary care physician knew squat about weight
loss surgery and basically told me it would leave me with
diahhrea for the rest of my life and would be a big mistake.
Luckily I did not need a referral for surgery and did it all
without her. The PCP that I have now has a working knowledge
of the surgery and has been very supportive.
