Question:
After surgery I had a lot of numbness in hands and a patch on my thigh

After surgery, I woke up with two numb hands an a numb patch the size of a dinnerplate on my left thigh. The right hand came back right away, and the left hand took almost two months. I am almost 6 months post op now, and the place on my thigh is still numb. The doctor originally thought it was because I was on the skinny little surgical table for 5 hours and some nerves got pinched. But now I'm concerned that the thigh won't heal at all. Doctors don't seem to be too concerned...should I?    — Amy C. (posted on July 20, 2005)

Nerves take a very long time to heal after an injury. It could take as long as a year or more for normal feeling to return.

I had numbness on my thigh as well. It does go away. I don't remember feeling the numbness after 6-7 months, but we're all different. It will get better.

Don't worry it happened to me also, my right hand was completely numb, i couldnt move it at all, wasn't able to open anything or pick things up, until about 4 months out, they stapped my arm down too tight and caused nerve damage,so i went to a specialist, and he gave me some meds for the pain, even though it was numb i would get terrible shooting pains in it, and said it has to heal on it's own. nerves heal at about an inch a month. so if 6 inches of nerve was damaged thats 6 months give or take a month. it does get better though

I had surgery on 7/29/05 and the numbness I experienced in my right thigh was supposedly due to my epidural. Today is December 3, 2005 and it's just about all gone now.
