Question:
Anyone start at over 550 lbs. and was told....
...that they would probably need a revision because one surgery would not make you lose all the weight? My dr. told me because I started at 563 lbs that I would. He said I would only lose about 200 lbs which would still make me obese at 363 lbs. Just wondering if anyone has had the revision and if it was as bad as the initial surgery? — Scott D. Scott,
There has been many who started over 500 lbs & got down
to there goal weight & then some. You have to change your way of
thinking after WLS & eat healthy choices & you will keep losing the
weight. Check out some of the profiles on this board. Even some of them
were over 500 lbs to start with. Hang in There!! You will do just fine.

I would not count on having to have a revision. I lost 225 pounds and
started at 354. Weight loss depends on your body and your compliance with
eating, liquid intake and exercise. Good luck.

Make sure you research the DS (duodenal switch) procedure before settling
on a surgery or a surgeon. It is particularly effective for those with a
BMI >50 (although it works wonderfully as well for those who are
"lightweights" too).

Original poster here. Just to clarify...I have already had the surgery 7
weeks ago. I'm down 70 lbs so far. I just wanted to know if anyone has had
the revision strictly for the reasons in the original question. Thanks!

The docs that make these statements are sure out of the loop. For someone
starting at your weight, 200 lbs will be achieved in a realatively short
time. I would not be uncommon for you to lose 300 lbs and maybe more.
Skin removal will definitely drop quite a few lbs also, which you will
likely want, starting where you did. Don't sweat what your doc said and
just prove him wrong. I lost 252 lbs in about 14 months. I started at
442.

Scott I belong to an online group at msn called Weight Loss Surgery Support
& Advice. I'm one of the managers and the other managers name is Rex.
Rex started out at 554 pounds and got down below his doctors goal weight.
He weighs around 170 now, give or take not more then a couple of pounds. He
only had one surgery the RNY, and he had an adominoplasty which almost
killed him. He was eligible for other plastics but decided after the
abdominoplasty he'd pass on any more. He had done wonderfully and is a
great inspiration. You can do it with just one surgery. It's more
difficult, you might have to work at it a little harder but it can be done.
Rex was very diligent about following his doctors orders for eating and he
had great success. I started out at 354 and got to 165. I'm 6' tall so
thats a pretty good weight. I hope you get all you hope for out of your
surgery. Carrie

An excellent resource for people with a starting weight in this category is

The original poster has already had surgery and seems mainly to be seeking
reassurance, but in general, these rules hold:
1) Lightweights (those starting out below 300 pounds) have the best chance
of reaching a "goal" weight (where "goal" equals at or
below a BMI of 25).
2) Reaching goal weight is very different from maintaining goal weight--the
better measure of any weight-loss surgery. Almost everyone, regardless
of surgery type or starting weight, will regain some weight.
3) Regardless of surgery type or beginning weight, avoiding sugars and
exercising will enhance your results.

I started at 486 lbs... It is 2 years later I now weigh in at 225 lbs...I
have lost 261 lbs. I don't know what kind of surgery your doc does but you
should seek a second doc's advice on this and also if you do some more
research there have been alot of people at your weight that have lost more
them 200 lbs...
