Question:
when can you drink
My birthday is June 19th. My friends are taking me out for my birthday. I had surgery on April 10th. 2005. I have done really well. 30 down and going. My question is will I be able to drink when we go out. I don't drink beer but I do like smerioff ice. Will I be able to handle it? I don't want to get sick and ruin everyone's good time but I also don't like to go dancing and not be able to drink. — mbcarter (posted on May 27, 2005)

Hey Melanie. You have a new baby tummy, picture giving a 2 month old
alochol. It isnt advisable, that will tear up your tummy, not to mention
it is full of carbs, and carbonation, which will have you on the floor in
no time flat dumping, and the bubbles in your tummy will be very
uncomfortable. Bottled water is your best bet, since you will be dancing,
and sweating, you need to keep your body hyderated. Alochol will do
nothing but make you sick, and dehyderate you. There are pleanty of
birthdays, and chances to have a glass of wine. I wouldn't do it. I was
one week post op on my 43rd birthday, and trust me, I have more fun now
without drinking, than I EVER did before my surgery.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HUN!

I wouldn't do it either. I waited about 6 months before I tried alcohol,
and even then is was 1/4 glass of wine at home. Alcohol will effect you
much quicker than before too. It's actually kind of strange.

I was told to wait 6 months before drinking because of your liver. Your
liver is working overtime since the surgery and I was told that alcohol
interferes with the work the liver is doing. Plus the sugar in the drink
isn't good for you. Drinking after surgery really dehydrates you also.

With you only being post-op 2 months, I would suggest you wait a little
while. I do have drinks some now (I'm post op 14 months). They don't
bother me at all, the only difference is the amount. It only takes a very
little bit to feel it. Hope you have a Happy Birthday!

Be Careful !!!! Really sweet drinks will cause you to dump. I had this
happen on a date. I was in horrible pain. It was an amarreto sour. I even
let the ice melt so it was diluted. I'm 14 months out and this happened 2
months ago. I have had smirnoff O with no problems. But just be careful.
Drink slowly...

I had a glass of wine about 3 weeks after my surgery and had no problems, I
have since quit drinking (I am 2 years post op), I was pretty bad at it and
figured it was just more calories that I don't need now that I am at a
stage of maintaining.

Happy Birthday Melanie! I took my first drink Smirnoff Ice just love them
when I was 3 months out. I didn't do it any sooner. You may want to ask
your surgeon when he thinks would be best. I have smirnoff on occasions and
never had any problems at all. Have a great Birthday...Hugs, Grace

I was told to wait 6 months to a year. It really sucked for me because I
couldn't party for the big 3-0! You should be careful even if you have a
couple of sips I hear that the tolerance level becomes almost nothing after
surgery.

I was told that it is best not to drink, but Dr. said realistically
speaking it is ok to have a drink here and there but to remember it will
affect you much faster and stronger than before and to not put my self into
any dangerous situations. It is just common sense not to drink and drive.
I would also consider being very drunk at a bar potentially dangerous. One
could easily be taken advantage Of. Date rape almost always involves
alcohol - right? I only drink rarely, never ever drive after always have a
designated driver who is not drinking ANY alcohol. 1 drink makes me woozy,
2 make me very drunk and I don't care for the feeling so I just have one
and sip it slowly.

I am a drinker, and I have been way before my surgery. Sure, I obstained
for a while after surgery... but by two months out I began to drink.
Surely you must understand that you must find a different drink right now.
Smirnoff is not a good choice at this point. Go for some real alcohol
mixed, and when I say mixed I mean mixed. I started off with absolut and a
bottle of water.. which I mixed crystal light with. I drank the entire
bottle with the shot. This helped me to become acustomed with the
differences alcohol presents now... I didnt get too messed up. It isn't a
myth, this stuff does affect you much more easily than it did before... It
can be dangerous.. believe me I have found that out. I fell a few times
and that was after six months post op, it just hit me hard and I am used to
drinking the way I did before. As you lose weight you tolerence will go
down... I really could have hurt myself or at worse killed myself, just by
having about five drinks. Amazing, I know, but that is how it is... try to
learn to deal with it. I learned the hard way and am still learning...
with a scar on my eye and wrist, and elbow! It is so hard to adjust, but
we didn't do this so we could drink, we did this so we could live a more
normal and lengthy life... make your choices wisely!
Good luck,
Amber

If I were you I would stay away from smirnoff as the acids in it and the
carbonation won't do you any good. I think its to early. I just had my RNY
on April 29th and I would never think about drinking yet. It is of my
opinion but I don't think you stomach could handle it yet. On top of the
fact that that stuff is loaded with calories.

Have you consulted your surgeon? Many do not recommend having alcohol this
early out. Your body will not handle alcohol the same as it used to and
that's a lot of empty calories to be ingesting. If you don't feel that
you'll have fun dancing and celebrating your birthday without alcohol, well
that's a whole other issue. Isn't your health and success worth passing up
the drinks just this one birthday?

Melenie
I would go ahead and have something light like a glass of wine, but no
Smirinoff Ice, it has sugar which will cause you to dump. I know they say
not to drink, but I had a glass of wine two months out and I did fine. Let
me know if you have any further questions.
