Question:
Is it normal to have massive swelling in the pubic area at 4 weeks post op?
Hi I had a Panniculectomy just about 4 weeks Ago. This has been just the most painful recovery I have ever had and I have had several surgeries over the years. From day one, I have had massive swelling especially in the pubic area. I really do not feel much better after 4 weeks. Has anyone had this experience? Please let me know of your experience with this type of surgery. I am in Lake Tahoe. — Marlene D. (posted on April 3, 2005)

You may have a seroma, of fluid collection present in or near your pubic
area. Another possibility is a hematoma, or blood clot. Yet another
possiblity is that there may just be a lot of swelling. You should go
see your surgeon and be evaluated. If you are unable to see your surgeon,
you could go to your PCP or an emergency room and have an ultrasound of
the area, which will diagnose a fluid collection if present. I hope you
find this information useful.

I had the swelling and had a ton of fluid removed via needle. What a
relief.. I ended up with a low grade fever which put me back in the
hospital for 2 days with IV antibiotics. Get it checked ASAP with your PS.

I thought I had swelling over the pubic area and to my surprise it was not
swelling, just how it was going to look. It is actually a fat pad I didn't
notice with all the skin hanging down preop. My PS is revising it in a
couple weeks.

Yes, it is a common side effect. My DH had humongous swelling there post
op. It did finally go down thank goodness.
