Question:
what does retrograde filling of the native (old) stomach and duodenum mean?

My UGI report states that my pouch folds and empties very easily with no evidence for gastric outlet obstruction. There is free emptying of the gastric contents into the Roux loop. On delayed imaging, there is some filling in a retrograde manner of the stomach and duodenum, but this filling appears to fill retrograde and not antegrade. In the conclusion it says there is some filling in a retrograde manner of the native (old) stomach and duodenum. What in the world does all this mean? Fistula?? does it mean failed mechanics? As a radiologist who has NOT done UGI's on bypass, I can tell you this. The contents emptyng from the pouch is refluxing into the bowel loop connected to the remainder of the stomach. Check the anatomic diagram from your surgical brochure to understand what is occuring. You would need to ask your surgeon if this means anthing clinically important. My GUESS is that this is not significant and the contents refluxing back into the remainder of the stomach will empty unless you have a bowel obstruction further down the bowel to cause the reflux.
