Question:
Do you adjust your vitamins depending on your food intake

I just discovered the nutrient section on fitday.com so now I can add up just how much of my daily recommended vitamins I am getting from my food intake... My question is how many of you if any count the nutrients that you get in your food toward your total nurtient intake and adjust your vits. LIke I have a protein every morning and since I know the stats in them so say if my protein shake has 400mgs. of calcium then I would only need between 600-800mgs. of additional calcium... Or does every suppliment with the same amount of vitamins no matter what..    — tracy W. (posted on March 22, 2005)

Tracy, My endochronologist says anything we get from food is simply icing on the cake. Eat good, healthy, whole foods - go for lots of nutrient rich food choices by all means, but you still have to take the boatload of vitamins. It's real life post-WLS! Blessings, dina

The only thing I count from food is sugar. I count it as a larger clothing size. I don't count any of the nutrition from food, except a few trace minerals that are absorbed lower in the intestine. And even so, not as numbers, just that there they are.

Personally I have always taken vitamins even prior to WLS. Food has nutrients, but not as much as you'd think, because everything is so processed. My doc says a good multivit everyday. Calcium 1000-1200 mg each day. B12 1200 mcg each week, lots of fluids!! And protein 40-60 gms per day. I find that 60-80 is better. I just had my 6 month blood work done and the only thing I am deficient on is Zinc. I use Fitday too and I keep track of Proteins, (#1) Fats, Carbs and calories. That helps me to see where I am messing up. But by all means take your vitamins and don't worry about those numbers. You'll drive yourself nuts! Good luck hugs. Jo

I have a history of kidney stones and am under instructions not to exceed 1200 mg calcium from whatever source it is. I do adjust my calcium (citrical plus)supplimentation based on my food intake. As far as my multis - 2 a day every day no matter what, Liquid B-Complex 1 dropper every day no matter what, Iron (325 mg ferrous sulfate twice a day) and C - 500 mg 2 X every day with my iron. Vit E - 400 mg dry E every day. I figure a little extra is not going to hurt and I don't want to take my chances. I also use fit day to track sporadically, and do real well on most of my nutrients. I am usually low on iron, and with a history of anemia that responded so well to supplementation I must continue to supplement that as well. So my bottom line is I take prety much the same thing daily regardless of my intake with the exception of calcium. However, you should follow your own doctors advice first and foremost because we all have our own medical histories that your own Dr. is familiar with and can best advise you>
