Question:
Does Alabama require mandatory insurance coverage?
I saw a question about states and mandatory insurance coverage for this surgery. I need to know if Alabama is covered by this law. I work and live in Alabama, but my corporation headquarters is in South Carolina and my insurance is BCBS of South Carolina PPO. Which laws apply. I need help desparately as I need this surgery. — Susan H. (posted on August 20, 2004)

I dont know about Alabama but here in GA it is only mandatory that
insurance companies OFFER WLS coverage to be bought by a company. It is
not LAW that any company has to buy it. I was lucky the place I work for
did buy the coverage but I know several folks who have the same insurance
here in GA but their company did not buy coverage for WLS and they the
insurance co will not pay for the surgery. Start with your HR department
and find out from them if it is covered or not. Best of luck to you.

Alabama does not require that you have insurance for this surgery. You may
pay out of pocket.

According to what I have heard in a recent Weight Loss Sugery support group
meeting your insurance will cover 80% of the cost and you would have to pay
20% of the cost since your insurance is out of state. I hope this helps.

I live in Alabama and our insurance carrier is BCBS of SC PPO. I had my
surgery in Feb. I had to pay a 300 co pay, and a $1,800.00 deductible,
other than that everything was covered.
