Question:
Why does my nose seems like it drips all the time.
It seems like I am constantly wiping my nose from a clear nasal drip. I stay cold a lot and I wondered if this wasd why. Has anyone else hade this problem since surgery? Also another qustion, I just heard of a girl who lives in my hometown that had to have surgery because her intestines got all tangled up. She is 2 years post op. Have you heard of this happening? Thanks! — cindylou56 (posted on April 12, 2004)

I also have a constantly running nose. It seems to run more often after I
eat or drink something - which means (since I'm constantly sipping
something) it runs constantly! I hope someone else can enlighten us as to
why this happens.

I just answered this on another post, but every morning I wake up with a
runny nose and a very flemmy throat, never thought about it until I read
these posts. I also catch every cold, flu or what ever else is going
around, I'm sick like 2wks out of every month and all my blood work comes
back good, so I have no clue why this is now and im SO cold all the time,
but I rather be cold than hot and sweaty :o)

I'm so anxious to hear the answers to this question. I too have had the
same thing going on with the clear runny nose. Not bad, just like a
constant drip. I also find that it's worse right after I eat. I haven't
had trouble with getting sick more often than normal (knock on wood) but
the drippy nose is bugging me!!!! Hope someone knows what this is...oh
yeah, and count me in for being cold and I live in Florida where it's
mostly warm. Hope we get answers. Robin 9/17/02 - Lap Rny 290/135/137

I sure hope someone has a good answer to this....I thought it was just me.
My nose runs all the time, I have tried allergy meds and none have helped
at all. Though I have been sick only once since surgery last August, right
when I got home....I blamed it on the change in climates!!!

No answer from me either, but it's nice to know I'm not alone!

I just recenly noticed the drippy nose thing at 14 months out. I think it
has been happening for a month or so. I just attributed it to allergies or
sinus but who knows?? My bloodwork is great and I got the flu shot last
fall so I've been ok with that. I have not really gotten sick, but then
again I rarely did before surgery. I'd be curious to know if anyone finds
out a legitimate reason for the nose thing.

I just wanted to say that I have the "constantly runny nose"
also. I live in PA and have had it for at least the past year. Other than
my nose dripping, I haven't had a cold or allergy problems that I can
attiribute it to. I am almost at 17 months post-op and never thought of it
as a post-op side effect until I read the post & responses. But, I
have it too! Just thought I's share....open RNY 10/20/2002 315/127

Gustatory rhinitis.
Yep, me too! Ever since wls. It's kind of a friendly reminder to me that
I am getting full. LOL Only happens when I eat. Weird huh?
It comes up in the google search, check it out.
Night!

Well glad to read all these posts, thought that I might be losing my mind
or something, but I also have this same nose dripping problem, all I can
say is keep the kleenex handy .

A few months ago at the Pacific Laparoscopy SF meeting (almost all DS
patients), someone asked the same question, so it was asked of the group
"How many of you get a runny nose after you eat since the DS?"
and almost every post-op raised their hands; it was then asked "How
many of you got a runny nose after you ate BEFORE the DS?" -- and I
was the only one who raised my hand. To be fair, I like spicy foods, so
often I have a reasonable excuse for it (both before and after surgery),
but it seemed to be an almost universal response post-op. As I recall, the
surgeon surmised that the gustatory rhinitis was a side effect of messing
with the vegas nerve that runs along the stomach, and that after eating,
the stretching of the small stomach muscle stimulated the nerve. I dunno,
I just always go blow my nose and try to be grateful that it is one of the
signs that I have learned to listen to that I am finished eating. I used
to ignore it, but I now know what it is (along with the very clear
"don't you dare eat another bite" signal I get from my tummy
too). If this is the worst side effect I have to live with, I will be very
grateful indeed. Diana Cox, DS 8/5/03; 285/210/160?

Make that "vagus" nerve -- it's not a nerve that makes you gamble
with your stomach contents!

I have never heard of "Gustatory rhinitis"! I've had a drippy
nose too, but it can happen at any time for me, not just when I've eaten. I
NEVER used so many Kleenex in my life! It looks like you're not alone in
this.

Wow - how interesting on the runny noses....whoda thunk? I did want to say
that in reference to the 2nd part of the question it would be something I'm
not experienced in, but I do know some people get hernias after wls and
sometimes the intestine can get caught in the hernia. That is
life-threatening and needs to be dealt with asap. Don't know if that was
the case with her or not, but it's always better to be safe than sorry if
you get a hernia - get in and have it checked out!

WOW my nose has constantly running i never thought it to be related to wls,
i just thought it was just a runny nose all these weeks. Nice to know there
is a reason now.

This may not be quite the same thing, but I have found that my nose drips
as a sort of "dumping symptom". If I have over-eaten, or maybe
eaten something with more sugar than I should have, my nose will begin to
drip. This continues for hours afterward. I've always taken it as a
symptom of dumping...an odd one, but that's what I've always assumed it
was!
— Mary W.

I too get a runny nose after eating, I presumed it was a form of dumping,
and I had thought of posting the question myself. Enjoy the ride.

Yep, what Diana said...it's the vagal (or vagus) nerve in the stomach.
It's usually the sign that we've eaten 1 bite too many. :)

immediately..strange isnt it...

Well, just like everyone here I too have a runny nose now. I am 18 months
out and have had this problem since about 1 month out. I don't believe that
it is from overeating for me though because all I have to do is think of
food and my nose runs clear. Even smelling something cooking causes me to
reach for the Kleenex. Very strange............

I don't really think it's related to eating. I'm 2.5 years post-op and
have a constantly drippy nose whether I've eaten or not!
— LLinderman
April 13, 2004
I have the same problem I just never put 2 & 2 together to figure out
it was after I eat. I guess I eat since I a preop and am not really eating
that much I never thought to notice where and when the nose drip happened.
I think this is funny....I thought it was just the pollution in Houston.

You know this a good question, I not sure anyone answered it but I will
continue to search because I am the type of person who NEVER had to blow
her nose (that is not a good thing); I am positive it has something to do
with WLS and the mucus that we get when overeating or too quickly because
that is when I can blow up a or should I say "down" a river.
I'll get back to you when I find a definitive answer. In the meantime, I
don't think you should worry about it - just BLOW IF OFF!

WOW WOW - I thought it was an allergy all this time. Cold - boy I've never
been this cold before - I always think it's due to the loss of my
insulation. What a great guestion and answers - makes me fell normal.
