Question:
How do you know if you have a hernia?

I have a small knot about the size of quarter at the top and to the left of my incision. At times there is an burning or stinging sensation. I am almost 8 months postop and I just notice this a few days ago. Could this be a hernia? Open RNY Down 108 pounds. Thanks for your info!    — cindylou56 (posted on March 14, 2004)

Sounds like a hernia to me--especially with the stinging sensation. You might want to make an appt with your primary care doctor and have it checked out and document the hernia. Then, when you see your bariatric surgeon, share it. As long as the pain is not severe and you can reduce it (push it in) I was told not to worry.

Hi Cynthia: Yep, could be a hernia. Check with your doc asap. Avoid lifting or straining until you get the word from the doc. Mine was huge, near football sized and it hurt like heck. Really big ones are not as dangerous as small ones though. Please, be careful if the darn thing gets trapped in the tear, it can become a medical emergency. Deal with it promptly. (A collection of fluid or a hematoma can act the same way, so you have to get this checked out with the doc so that you know what you are dealing with.) My best to you! Polly

A bulge and burning, stinging sounds like it could be a hernia. When I complained about burning from stomach it seems no one could tell me what the problem is. I had already been diagnosed with a hernia which the doctor saw by having me lie down and then do a sit up. My little incisional hernia popped right up. When I complained about the burning, I was given meds for a ulcer. It never worked. I noticed I would get the pain especially when I was sitting in a certain position and was pretty sure it was a hernia. After my hernia repair, no more pain.
