How do you know if you have a hernia?

I have a small knot about the size of quarter at the top and to the left of my incision. At times there is an burning or stinging sensation. I am almost 8 months postop and I just notice this a few days ago. Could this be a hernia? Open RNY Down 108 pounds. Thanks for your info!
