Question:
High Protein, Low Fat foods

I am currently a little over 5 months post-op, down 83 lbs. Started at 325, currently at 242. I have about 100 more lbs that I would like to lose. I am experiencing my first real plateau... I've been at the same weight for about 3 weeks now. VERY frustrating!! :( But... I am trying my best to up my water, exercise, and protein. I enter my foods in fitday.com every day, and I average around 1000 calories a day. I drink about 40 - 50 oz of water a day -- I'm working on bringing that up. And I usually get around 60-80 grams of protein a day. I exercise 3 times a week with bodylastics. Lately, I've been noticing that my fat grams are sometimes VERY high... around 60 grams a day!! From the beginning I have been able to eat anything, only small portions. So it is very easy for me to go off plan. Can anyone give me some ideas on low fat, high protein foods? I have to believe that I haven't stopped losing for good and that the scale will begin to drop again, hopefully soon!! Any suggestions are welcome! ---Sarah 9/18/03 325/242/140    — sibarra (posted on March 4, 2004)

Have you tried shrimp, crab and other fish? I have been buying lump crab meat at Wal-Mart in 8 oz pkgs. and using it in salads and making crabcakes out of it. Great protein source. I get beef jerky and use that a lot when I have the temptation to nibble. Nuts are good as long as you don't over do them because of the fat content. My guidelines for fat were no more than 20 grams per day.

Don't forget that your body needs to catch up with your weight loss. You think that you are at a plateau, but in reality your body needs to reproportion itself. If you are still losing inches and your clothes are looser, then you are not at a plateau. If you haven't lost weight or inches in a two month period then you are at a plateau. Also remember that by exercising you are building muscle and that is heavier than fat. So -- in conclusion -- don't beat up on yourself. Be patient, you're doing great!

I eat a lot of turkey or chicken breast in addition to seafood. I also eat low fat cottage cheese for breakfast. Just an FYI, if you are also watching your carbs, if you go for the lower fat version of some things such as salad dressings, the fat is lower, but the carbs will be higher. You are doing great - keep up the good work.
