Question:
Has anyone had the experience of workman's comp. ins. covering the procedure?
I was injured on the job and am collecting workmans comp. My dr says there are tests he needs to run on me but can't due to my weighing 530 lbs. he wants to talk to the ins. carrier to find out if they will cover this procedure. Has anyone had anything like this? I figure I have a 5% chance it would be covered. — Scott D. (posted on March 1, 2004)

I guess my first question would be whether you were normal weight (or close
to normal) before your injury so that it can be determined that the weight
gain was incident to the injury. If you were already obese before the
injury, I would guess that workers' comp won't pay for surgery.

Scott, you need to update your profile with info so others know more about
you before we respond to you and your question. I guess my question to you
would be why do you feel that workmen's comp should pay for your surgey?
Workmen's comp is for when your are injured on the job and it pays for your
medical bills that result from that injury, I think you are going to have a
rough row to hoe with convincing them that they should pay for your WLS. I
am sorry that I could not give you a little more sunshine on this issue.
Maybe there are some others out there that are in the insurance industry
that would be able to tell you more.

There is a man in my support group who had WLS from the same surgeon I had
surgery from whos entire surgery was paid for by workcomp insurance. He
had a back injury on the job and I guess they decided it would pay off in
the end. So yes it is possible, good luck with everything.
